Frequently Asked Questions about the Online MPH Program
What are the requirements for admission to the MPH program?
The requirements include a bachelor’s degree related to public health with a minimum GPA of 3.0; successful completion of a statistics course at the undergraduate level; and an interview with the MPH program director or person designated by the program director.
What are some examples of a bachelor’s degree related to public health?
Because public health entails so many professions, any number of majors will prepare you for the program: community health, biology, human services, and exercise science are just a few.
How long will it take for me to finish the MPH program?
Two years and 8 weeks if you take one course at a time, with 6 courses in a year. If you’re able to do the field practicum while taking a course, you can complete the program in 2 years.
Can I complete the entire MPH program online?
Yes, except for Global Health, a course in the Community Health Education specialization that is not required (but highly recommended). This real-time course includes a trip to a developing country for a week-long mission experience. The practicum requires a face-to-face experience in the work field.
What are specializations?
Specializations are focused educational tracks that allow you to customize your coursework to your preferred field of professional practice. Concordia University, Nebraska currently offers two specializations, Community Health Education and Health Policy and Administration. Additional tracks are being considered for the future.
What is a capstone experience?
The culmination of Concordia’s MPH program, the capstone experience provides an opportunity for you to apply learned theories in real-life situations. The capstone experience consists of two 8-week classes: a Public Health Field Practicum and Applied Research in Public Health, in which students create a research project.
How can I get field work experience when I’m online?
In establishing your practicum, you will meet online with a Concordia advisor to evaluate your coursework results and determine your next steps. Your advisor will suggest some possible agencies or types of organizations for you to contact. You’ll have the best of both worlds: real-time experience and 24/7 online contact with your advisor.
I currently work in public health. Would I be able to use my job as my capstone experience?
Yes, your job might be applicable to use as your Public Health Field Practicum. Your advisor can give you more information.
