What is the function of human services?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics defines social and human services as the benefits and services that help clients improve the quality of their life.1 Services can include medical and food assistance, transportation, job training, counseling and emotional support. Human service workers assess client needs, investigate their eligibility, monitor and keep case records, and report progress to supervisors and case managers.
What requirements are needed for admission to the MHS program?
An undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher is required for full admission. Before admission, you must submit your application and transcripts to the graduate college for review. Depending on your education and experience, other prerequisites may apply.
In which fields can I use my degree?
Health care, advocacy, home health development, general social services, pastoral care and counseling are just a few fields with human services applications.
How long will it take for me to finish the MHS program?
Two years if you take six hours each term.
Can I complete the entire MHS program online?
Yes. No matter what your schedule is, you can fit classes around your job, family and other commitments. The time and expense you save in commuting is considerable as well.
What are specializations?
Specializations allow you to customize your coursework to your preferred field of study. Twelve credit hours are required for graduation. Concordia’s online MHS program offers three areas of specialization: Gerontology, Community/Public Health, and Human Services Leadership and Management. You may also take a generalist track by choosing any four courses from the specialization courses.
I currently work in the field. Would I be able to substitute classes with my work experience?
Possibly. Depending on your experience, you may be able to substitute practicum or other electives into your program. Your advisor can give you specific details.
I’m starting at Concordia after attending another school. Can any I transfer any of the credits I earned there?
Yes, you can transfer up to nine hours of relevant coursework from another institution, with the approval of your advisor.
Can high-level undergraduate classes be substituted for graduate classes?
If you have taken an undergraduate 400-level class that’s equivalent to a graduate class, you may replace that graduate class with a different elective.
